Néstor Zumaya

Néstor Zumaya is a Chicago-based street photographer whose black-and-white images are striking in their rawness and creativity. With a bold eye for reflection and juxtaposition, he transforms everyday scenes into layered compositions that feel both immediate and surreal. His work invites viewers to see the city from unexpected angles, the honest, the poetic, and what’s alive.

Human beings are innately alone; we desire to be known, yet face an uphill battle when faced with others’ preconceived notion of our own identity.

My project “Designated Identity” is a series of black and white photographs of human figures that reflect on the feelings of loneliness and isolation, in the need to hide our emotions in our day-to-day lives to fulfill the social contract, and in the internal battle of wanting to show who we really are but being hindered by the preconceptions of others. Ultimately, the desire to be known is frequently at odds with the need togo unnoticed.
